Renewing Your Inner Self

renewing your inner self

Therefore we do not become discouraged [spiritless, disappointed, or afraid]. Though our outer self is [progressively] wasting away, yet our inner self is being [progressively] renewed day by day. For our momentary, light distress [this passing trouble] is producing for us an eternal weight of glory [a fullness] beyond all measure [surpassing all comparisons, a transcendent splendor and an endless blessedness]! (2 Corinthians 4:16-17)

After spending time with my wife this afternoon, I realize that I need to take more time to renew my inner self.

After church today, we went to a store to buy some food, and then we went to a local park to enjoy a picnic. This time of eating, chatting, and resting was good for our souls. Even in the quietness we could hear the birds chirping, the waters behind us flowing, and the sound of stillness bringing us peace.

Doing simple things can renew your inner self:

  • getting enough rest, especially if you have been missing sleep during the week.
  • eating good food, instead of eating whatever is available.
  • putting your feet up, listening to silence, and relaxing in a comfortable chair.
  • entering into worship with others, or even by yourself, to enjoy God’s presence.
  • sharing your pain, and receiving encouragement from a trusted friend.
  • spending time reading scripture, a favorite devotional, or a good book.
  • taking an epsom salts bath, a hot shower, or stretching tight muscles.
  • learning to relax, knowing when you are tired, and setting aside time to rest.

Lord Jesus,

Help me to set aside time so that I can rest, relax, and even enjoy more sleep. Show me how to manage my time, re-adjust my schedule, and even say “no” to things that are really not important. I need to be able to fully function, and to enjoy the life you have given me. So, speak to me about what changes I need to make, as I follow you, and fulfill the Father’s will in my life. Thank you, Jesus! Amen.
