What Is True Faith?

what is true faith

True faith is man’s weakness leaning on God’s strength. When man has no strength, he can lean on God and become powerful. The trouble is that we have too much strength and confidence in ourselves. (Moody, Dwight L.. The Way to God – Updated Edition (p. 62). Aneko Press. Kindle Edition.)

I came across this definition of faith, as I was reading D.L. Moody’s book called The Way To God, and I really liked how he defined true faith.

Our confidence needs to continue to grow and remain in God Himself, and not in ourselves. As scripture says: it is not by man’s might, nor by man’s power, but by God’s Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).

Any credit man gives himself, does not impress me, because God deserves all of the glory for what God does. Man needs to humble himself. In fact, I like how John The Baptist knew and understood his place, as the forerunner of Jesus of Nazareth. He recognized in preparing for the Way to come, he was not even worthy to untie the sandals of the Messiah.

True humility, like true faith, knows its place and works together in union with God to accomplish His purposes.

Lord Jesus,

May you continue to teach us how to lean on you in our weakness, but when the power of God flows through us, may we take none of the glory. For apart from you we are nothing, and we can do nothing of an eternal purpose in our own strength. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for keeping us humble, yet strong in you. Amen.
