Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (1 John 5:1-5)
What does it mean to overcome? It means to conquer and to prevail. We are born of God when we believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Faith expressed in Him helps us to prevail through circumstances, and to grow in character, as we trust Him through our life journey. He gives us His victory to overcome every obstacle in our way.
Jesus reminds us that our peace is found in Him, because in this world we will face trouble, but take heart because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Jesus has gained the victory for us. He is the the Living One. He died, but look–He is alive forever and ever! And He holds the keys of death and the grave (Revelation 1:18).
Beloved, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37). Since God is for us, He is also the One who justifies us, and no one can condemn us, for there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Nothing can separate us from His love, not even death itself, for God’s love is found in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
Thank you for overcoming the world. You paid for our sin in full, you overcame death, and you are alive forevermore. As believers in your name, you inspire us to move forward, to prevail through troubling times, and to trust you with all of our hearts. Thank you for your great love. To you be all the glory! Amen.
